A Decade of Magic: Why Disney on Ice Never Fails to Delight

I have been taking my godchildren to Disney on Ice since 2012, and it is ALWAYS a wonderful afternoon out. Sure, I am probably more excited than they are (yes, I have a Disney Hits song list on Spotify and no, I don’t care that Disney Adults are so cringe to Gen Z 😛) and I am frantically searching for an adult Princess Jasmine costume, but come on, who wouldn’t be?

You’ll be surprised by how many of the songs you’ll know by heart, and you’ll be making a core memory with your children that they’ll fondly remember for years after. It’s a win-win!

Essential Survival Tips for Parents and Guardians

With more than a decade of experience attending a Disney on Ice show with little ones, here are my top tips for parents and guardians:

  1. Book your tickets TODAY: These shows sell out so quickly, and you do not want to disappoint your tiny Olaf fan by missing out on them. Tickets start at R295 and are available from Ticketmaster.
  2. Get there early: Winter and school holidays in South Africa mean two things: rain, which makes South African drivers forget how to drive, and traffic galore (especially in Pretoria!), so leave enough time to travel, get in those last-minute loo breaks, visit the concession stands and enjoy the cute photo opps.
  3. Strollers and Wheelchairs checklist: If you are arriving with strollers or wheelchairs, please check your venue’s accommodations and plan accordingly for seating and parking.
  4. Comfort items: The show is a spectacle and a children’s event, so expect loud music and sounds as well as bright lights and a crowd of excited families and frazzled adults. If your little one has any sensory challenges, please remember to pack their headphones and other items to assist with grounding.
  5. Eat before: In the wise words of Hogwarts’ Professor Lupin: “Eat, you’ll feel better”. I mean you, Mom and Dad: being surrounded by hundreds of screaming children and your own kids asking for a snack/toy/when Buzz Lightyear is coming out for the seventh time will require energy and patience, so get those sugar levels up before leaving home.😉
