Guys, it is my second favourite month of the year (November obviously being my birthday month and top favourite) because it’s Halloween Month!

Now that we are on adjusted level 1 of the national lockdown and mostly vaccinated, we have a little bit more room to move about and can enjoy the horrible delights on offer (within the relevant safety protocols).

Here are my 3 spooktacular ways to celebrate Halloween this October:

  1. Answer the horrific call of The Ring at the Galileo Open Air Cinema: Africa’s most beautiful garden, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, will be the frightful site for this special Halloween screening of the 2002 cult hit, The Ring, on Sunday 31 October 2021. As always, the Galileo has some great viewing options and will host its traditional best dressed competition on the night so channel your inner Samara and be in line to win. Tickets are available here. For a reminder of just what makes Naomi Watts so terrifying relatable , watch the trailer of The Ring below:

2. Scream your lungs out at the 17th Annual South African HORRORFEST: Ever since I accidentally gatecrashed one of their screenings at The Labia Theatre in Gardens in 2014, this thrilling movie festival has been a highlight of my Halloween celebrations. This year’s edition will be a hybrid of live and online screenings and is an absolute must-do! You can view the screening list here (DO keep an eye out for updates on their extremely popular The Rocky Horror Picture Show screening – cosplaying is encouraged. I’ll be waiting for news with antici…pation!)

3. Netflix and thrill on your couch: The streaming giant doesn’t always nail the ghoulish factor with its movies but its series scare the living daylights out of me. I couldn’t sleep after watching Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor so I have been looking forward to watching his latest scarefest Midnight Mass. Set on a small island where mysterious and creepy things start happening when a new pastor arrives, the show features a quirky cast including the scary hot Rahul Kohli (Bly Manor and iZombie), Kate Siegel  (Hill House and Bly Manor), Annabeth Gish (The X-Files and The West WIng), Hamish Linklater (Legion and The Crazy Ones), Zach Gilford (LA’s Finest and Friday Night Lights )and more. You know it’s good if even Leonie, who is notoriously anti-horror, has been raving about it. Check out the trailer below and put it at the top of your must-watch list:

Until next time … BOO!
