A Superfans SA Insider’s Guide to Comic Con Cape Town 2024

A Superfans SA Insider’s Guide to Comic Con Cape Town 2024

Fandom, ASSEMBLE!

It’s our favourite time of the year again: Comic Con Cape Town returns to the Mother City for its second annual event and we are SUPER excited.

Master the art of the quick change (there are no telephone booths around so you can’t pull a Clark Kent to Superman transformation, though 😊), transform into your best costume and meet us at the Cape Town International Convention (CTICC) 2 from Saturday 27 April to Wednesday 1 May 2024.

We’ve been attending the Comic Cons, hosted by Reed Exhibitions, since 2018, so we know quite a few fantastic tips that you, the most die-hard geek, can use to Hulk Smash your way through your first one.

Here is the Superfans SA Insider’s Guide to Comic Con Cape Town 2024:

Book your tickets:

There will be no joining the Dark Side or gaining access to nerd Valhalla without your must-have tickets. Unlike Charlie, you are not going to find these in special chocolate bars (don’t worry, this event is 100% real, unlike that Glasgow incident, and you will not be left high, dry and without chocolate – in fact there are several options available at the Food Hall so pick up your favourite bar there!).

Here’s a look at what those must-have tickets got Con attendees last year:

You can book your tickets via the Con’s amazing website. Saturday is already sold out so be faster than The Flash and book yours TODAY.

Get your Meet and Greet Packages:

We are fangirling HARD for the top tier guests that the Con organising team have managed to pull out of their magic hats! For literal years, it’s been our dream to have Cape Town’s very own talented performer and star of hit international shows including Lucifer and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, Lesley-Ann Brandt, appear at a Con on home soil and it’s FINALLY happening! We cannot wait to have her speaking Lilim, aka Afrikaans to us.

Amongst the absolute must-haves for your photography and autograph collections are Sean Gunn of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy fame; most of Netflix’s wildly popular show One Piece’s cast (we are personally madly infatuated with Langley Kirkwood, one of South Africa’s choice actors since his days as a charismatic cult leader on now cancelled soapie Isidingo) and the absolute bevvy of artists, including our favourite Bill Masuku.

Make memories with your idols by booking your sessions here.

Plan your Con schedule:

The Con team have conveniently popped their schedule onto their website. We strongly suggest you download the Comic Con app and plan your experience around your meet and greets, any of the guest panels you want to attend, the sideline events (there is a speed dating event too so who knows? You may meet the MJ to your Spiderman!), mealtimes and how far you can walk around in your costume.

Plan your Comic Con schedule via the app so that you don’t miss out on any of the cool things on offer, including Q&As with your favourite guests! Image credit: Superfans SA

Trust us on this: you do NOT want to meet Veronica Taylor of PokΓ©mon fame when you’re sweaty from being in a leather costume all day, dangerously hungry or your feet are aching from walking around in your Harley Quinn heels and carrying around that heavy bat.

Suit up:

Unless you have an Alfred living in your garage, whipping up a bullet-proof costume in record time, you are going to need to either make your own or rent one.

Leonie is our resident wardrobe mistress and there are a few places that she loves sourcing our costume basics and makeup from including Party City, Clicks and Crazy Store in Gardens. For all of our heavy-duty make-up and prosthetic needs, she loves Masque Makeup & FX Warehouse. From bald caps and liquid latex, to fake teeth and special contact lenses- they have it all.

Leonie rocks our Comic Con cosplay creation with a variety of specialized suppliers. Image credit: Superfans SA

If you are not quite ready to take on the mantle of Costumer Designer, we suggest visiting your nearest costume rental store or pop over to the Cosplay Cape Town group on Facebook to see what’s for sale.

Top up your bank cards:

The Exhibitors’ Hall is a treasure trove of geeky goods. Before you go spending like you’re Bruce Wayne, please ensure you’ve topped up your debit or credit cards and don’t forget to bring them along or load them onto your phone so you can shop until you drop.

Most of the vendors will have card machines or Yoco so you are in good, safe hands.

An extra tip: on the final day of the Con, the vendors tend to seriously drop their prices and there are plenty of bargains to be had.

Fuel up at the Food Hall:

In the great words of the late Remus Lupin, Professor of the Dark Arts at Hogwarts:

Listen to Professor Lupin. Image credit: Tenor

The CTICC’s in-house catering team really shines a Bat Signal on all things super food related at the Con and we’ll admit to feasting on ALL of their epic character themed burgers EVERY single day of last year’s event πŸ˜‰

Just look at one of them:

Hulk Smash Burger into our mouths! Yum, those CTICC caterers really got the superhero memo for Comic Con Cape Town. Image credit: Superfans SA

You’ll find the Food Hall on the second floor, right next to the Gaming Arena.

Charge those batteries:

You will be taking hundreds of photos and videos throughout the Con so be sure to charge your devices outside of your loadshedding schedules. Bring along a portable charger too.

There are some fantastic things to see, film and snap a photo of. You do NOT want to miss the Hugo Lambrechts Orchestra’s Disney set at the opening ceremony, the Cosplay Contests, the table top games sessions and more.

Here’s the Orchestra using the Force at last year’s Opening Ceremony:

Bring your manners along:

Aside from just generally being a good Con attendee who doesn’t litter, bully or push into lines, please be respectful of other cosplayers’ personal spaces. Ask their permission to take a photograph or video of or with them and under no circumstances will inappropriate behaviour and touching (both verbal and physical) be tolerated.

Channel your inner Matt Murdock/Daredevil and familiarize yourself with the Con’s policy so you can understand the legalese around it.

That’s it from us! Have a super fun Comic Con Cape Town 2024, Everyone.

If you want to come and say Hi to Leonie and I during the Con, pop us a DM on Instagram or Facebook and let’s set up that pow wow.

A Superfans September geek news roundup!

A Superfans September geek news roundup!

There is plenty to be excited about in the geek world this month: from a returning Comic Con Africa to a new season of a favourite Netflix show and the release of an all-new Disney+ live action classic, it’s one huge geek fest!

Let’s get into it:

Pinocchio:

When you wish upon a star … a star-studded live-action version of one of the ultimate classics is delivered!

Pinocchio will be released on Disney+ on Thursday 8 September 2022, only (sadly, there will be no theatrical release). Starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto, Cynthia Erivo as Blue Fairy, Luke Evans as The Coachman with voice actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key as Honest John and introducing Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio, this is one magical Disney adventure you won’t want to miss!

I’ll be honest and say I am a bit apprehensive about this live-action film. I didn’t love The Lion King and Aladdin made me question a few things about what we’re teaching children with these fairytales. I do hope Pinocchio leaves me with the same sense of wonder that the live-action Beauty and the Beast does every time I watch it (and I don’t care what people say, Emma Watson did a great job as Belle).

Cobra Kai:

Are you ready to wax on, wax off with Danny LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence once again?

The fifth season of Cobra Kai, the incredibly popular sequel to the Karate Kid movie franchise, will debut on Netflix on Friday 9 September 2022.

Our frenemies Danny (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka) are teaming up with another of Danny’s former foes Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) to take down the awful Cobra Kai Sensei Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) and show their students that good can prevail over evil, once and for all.

I’ve really enjoyed this series, especially during the lockdown when it gave me hope that life can get better. The first Karate Kid movie was released the year before I was born so, as with Stranger Things, I am enjoying being immersed in the 80s culture via the regular movie flashbacks. It is also great to see all of these actors who are in their late 50s and 60s kick some serious butt.

With Leonie competing in karate tournaments, this show has also helped me understand her passion and appreciate the sport. Now, say it with me: Cobra Kai never dies!

Comic Con Africa 2022:

It’s been nearly three years since Leonie and I wowed Comic Con attendees with our excellent cosplay in Johannesburg. While we aren’t making the geek pilgrimage to the Comic Con Africa 2022 weekend-long celebrations, plenty of you will and we wish you all of the best fun!

Comic Con Africa returns! Image credit: Comic Con Africa

Celebs on this year’s schedule (which is subject to change due to unavoidable circumstances) include Tati Gabrielle (YOU and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Selwyn Ward (Power Rangers franchise). The Artist talent is always a highlight of the Con and this year’s lineup doesn’t disappoint. Be inspired by Bill Masuku (Captain South Africa and Razor Man); Zack Howard (Hell Boy); Steve Ellis (Iron and Spiderwoman); Jason Masters (Batwoman, Captain America and James Bond) and more.

NB: Please remember that while regulations have been disbanded, COVID-19 is still around so take extra precautions to keep yourselves, your loved ones, the Comic Con team, stars, artists and other attendees as safe as you can.

An August Superfans geek news roundup!

An August Superfans geek news roundup!

It’s been a busy week in the geekdom with exciting Mother City comic convention announcements, the loss of a musical icon and the premiere of one of our favourite returning Netflix series!

Let’s get into it:

Comic Con Cape Town x FanConCapeTown is coming in 2023!

Two of the Mother City’s biggest geek conventions are teaming up to bring locals a festival that celebrates our wonderful community. Dust off your capes, don your masks and get ready to geek out at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town from 27 to 29 April 2023!

Comic Con Cape Town and FanCon Cape Town are joining forces for the biggest Mother City geek festival ever!

Leonie, Tendai and I have collectively decided we are skipping Comic Con Africa in Johannesburg in September (on account of work commitments and still being wary of big spreader events) and we were not particularly impressed with Reed Exhibitions’ lame attempt at hosting a multi-venue and event Comic Con Cape Town last year. We bitterly miss the excellent events FanCon Cape Town hosted from 2016 to 2019, with each year being better than the last. This team up between the giants in the industry sounds like a good idea, in theory, and so we’ll be suiting up for it. Look, if it doesn’t work out in this timeline, Doctor Strange can just reset it, right? Or Ms America can teleport us to another multiverse.

If nothing else, we are EXCITED to see the Artist Alley and excellent speakers FanCon is sure to bring to the table, as well as the movie and series celebrities Comic Con Africa (parent event of the Cape Town edition) is renowned for hosting. Something equally exciting to look forward to is seeing how the Stadium is adapted for a geek convention.

Goodbye to Olivia Newton-John:

It’s been a sad week for all Grease fans as we say goodbye to our original Sandy D πŸ™

The star lost her battle with cancer on Monday 8 August 2022. In addition to Grease, the 73 year old actress was known for her hit album Physical, her role in the 80s classic Xanadu and being a cancer awareness activist.

Rest in peace, Dame Olivia – we’ll always be hopelessly devoted to you.

Never Have I Ever returns!

Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and the gang are back for more teenage angst, the realest look at what growing up in an Indian family is like and ALL of the love triangle drama we could possibly handle. The third season of this Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher created series debuts on Netflix today so you know what I’m doing this weekend πŸ™‚

This season of Never Have I Ever is all about Devi sprucing up her social status and image, chiefly by going public with her smoking hot boyfriend Paxton (Darren Barnet). Knowing our lead character as well as we do, she is going to find some way of Deving it up but we’ll still love her for it. As always, Devi’s cringeworthy life is narrated by tennis legend John McEnroe.

That’s it for this month, folks! Join us next week on all of our socials and right here as we begin our watch of the Game of Thrones‘ prequel series House of the Dragon. In need of a Marvel fix? Check out Leonie’s epic Thor:Love and Thunder review!

Comic Con Africa to return in September 2022!

Comic Con Africa to return in September 2022!

Grab those capes, find a phonebooth (or your living room) and change faster than a speeding bullet into your best costume because Comic Con Africa will make its very welcomed return to Johannesburg from 22 to 25 September 2022.

That’s right, Superfans readers, the local edition of the biggest Con worldwide is coming to our sunny shores next year (fingers crossed and end of pandemic-willing).

The Reed Exhibitions team have been playing coy and dropped this little teaser on their Con socials yesterday:

All we know so far is that the event will move to the bigger Johannesburg Expo Centre which can host up to 80 000 people (the last in-person con was held at the Gallagher Convention Centre and Leonie and I were quite overwhelmed by the sheer volume of people in attendance).

What the 2022 iteration will look like is a mystery, particularly because we don’t know which level of lockdown we’ll be on, assuming we are still in lockdown then.

Curious about what photo opps and panels might look like in a post-lockdown world? Here’s a look at what the Supernatural conventions in the past month have looked like:

5 DC Fandome 2021 Trailers we’re the most excited for!

5 DC Fandome 2021 Trailers we’re the most excited for!

Fire up the Bat Signal: DC Fandome 2021 took the Internet by storm this past weekend and released ALL of the thrilling 2022/2023 teasers, trailers and sneak peeks we comic book geeks could ever want!

As difficult as it is to choose just 5 of them, here are the trailers we’re the most excited for:

The Batman:

Robert Pattinson is the next Hollywood star to don the Dark Knight’s cowl in Matt Reeves’s highly-anticipated Caped Crusader flick. The latest trailer also shows us our first full glimpses of ZoΓ« Kravitz’s Catwoman. We’re loving the fact that Zoe’s Catwoman joins her stepdad Jason Momoa’s Aquaman on the DC roster!

Black Adam:

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is bringing Shazam (Zachary Levi)’s arch nemesis Black Adam to life in this anti-hero origin tale next year.

The Flash:

Coming in like a hot bolt of lightning is our first look at Ezra Miller’s The Flash movie and it looks awesome! Is that 80s OG Batman Michael Keaton doing the voiceover? You betcha! Our favourite Speedster is crossing the multiverse and recruiting various versions of beloved characters, including the Batfleck.

Peacemaker:

If you loved John Cena’s hilarious turn as the adorably dumb Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad, you’ll be thrilled to know he is getting his own Peacemaker series on HBO Max.

Batwoman Season 3:

After successfully claiming the Batwoman mantle as Ryan Wilder in the second season, Javicia LeslieΒ  is back for more insane adventures in Gotham. This season, she’ll be teaming up with Rachel Skarsten‘s OTT villain with a growing heart, Alice. What possibly could go wrong?!

Follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook where we’ll be sharing our reviews, thoughts, hopes and more about these exciting DC offerings.

Comic Con Cape Town is coming to the Mother City for ONE day only!

Comic Con Cape Town is coming to the Mother City for ONE day only!

Superfans readers, we have the best news ever: Comic Con Cape Town will be held in our beautiful Mother City for one day only, on 2 October 2021!

This highly-anticipated event will feature a series of pop-up activities, including cosplay competitions for professionals, casuals and kids, the extremely popular Comic Art Drink & Draw & Sketch-off competitions, Pop Culture Quiz Sessions and Fandom meetups around Cape Town.

Those ready to socially engage with other Con attendees can look forward to gaming and table top competitions and film watch parties too.

Before Captain America gives us a PSA on being safe, Reed Exhibitions assures us that these pop-up activations at various locations will be held with COVID-19 regulated capacities and protocols in mind.

Leonie, Tendai and I are SUPER excited about this pop-up Comic Con Cape Town day and are already working on our epic costumes (hint: blessed be the fruit!)

A reminder of just how awesome our cosplay outings at a Con are:

Comic Con Africa’s Quizzes are back!

Comic Con Africa’s Quizzes are back!

Pop quiz participants, ASSEMBLE! That’s right, Comic Con Africa‘s quiz nights are back by popular demand and we are excited.

Look, we won’t lie: We Superfans got our butts handed to us in 2020’s Harry Potter, Game of Thrones (Shame! Shame! Shame!) , Wonder Woman and Sci Fi and Fantasy quizzes but we are ready to redeem ourselves.

Which is mightily handy since that is the theme for Thursday night’s quiz: Redemption!

See you online at 7pm on Thursday 11 February 2021 and may the odds be ever in your favour!

My #comicconafricaonline experience

My #comicconafricaonline experience

Thanks to the pandemic, most events are going virtual. While it is important for social distancing, it isn’t always great for that vital personal experience. Luckily, Comic Con Africa didn’t have that side effect this past weekend.

From online quizzes to live interviews with some of our favourite series stars and comic book artists, Tendai, Leonie and I had fantastic time together in cyber space and we really CANNOT wait to attend Con together in person ( fingers crossed for 2021!).

Some of my highlights include:

Cosplaying at home:

While I could not debut my Wonder Woman 1984 suit, I totally enjoyed modelling my tees and tiara at home

The Magicians’ Hale Appleman answering my book plotline question:

Being inspired by Bill Masuku, creator of the Captain South Africa comics:

Living my best online quiz taker life with Tendai every day:

Yelling “It’s Morphin’ Time!” and fangirling SO hard for Jason David Frank:

For everything I really loved about the online Con, there are areas I felt that they can improve on, namely:

  • Get better interviewers/panel moderators: I’m sure Con host Robbie Collins is a great comedian but an expert interviewer he is not and he let us down horribly in the Magicians and Jenny Frison interviews in particular. There are better questions to ask than what cartoon inspired a comic book artist and not insulting actors by not knowing that their series has been cancelled.
  • Improve app updates: While I know the programme was subject to change, the app wasn’t always updated as quickly as it should have been. A geek chick needed to plan her day and the changes messed things up somewhat here and there.

With great online power, comes great responsibility to make an online Con as awesome as possible. Reed Exhibitions did a great job, and with some tweaks, the Con can be even greater.

The weekend flew by faster than a speeding bullet! Here’s to an IRL Comic Con Africa next year!

#ComicConAfricaOnline is coming!

#ComicConAfricaOnline is coming!

Usually, Leonie and I would be frantically packing in our costumes, having that must-have Spur waffle at the airport and taking last minute super photos before jetting off to Comic Con Africahttps://www.comicconafrica.co.za/ in Joburg for a few days.

In this, the time of COVID, we, along with Tendai, will be getting our geek on virtually from our couches with #ComicConAfricaOnline from 24 to 27 September 2020!

A reminder of how we rocked that cosplay life at the Con last year:

This year, we’re in for four days of excellent entertainment with virtual celebrity artists and series stars, online quizzes, sketching sessions, cosplay competitions and yes, even an online karaoke session.

You can register for free here and don’t forget to download the Comic Con Africa 2020 app from the Play store to get your programme, order your merchandise and more.

I was already overexcited with the announcement of my favourite Power Ranger being a Con virtual guest but this morning, the organisers dropped this magical announcement:

Holy Umber, this is going to be FUN!

I’ll be pitting my comicbook fangirl smarts and fast fingers against other Con attendees at the Wonder Woman , Marvel and Pop Culture online quizzes before gushing over The Magicians, the Green Power Ranger and Umbrella Academy’s Number One:

In between checking out Will Slaney’s webslinging Spiderman drawing skills, I will be geeking out with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’s Tala Ashe and Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger’s Aubrey Joseph:

#ComicConAfricaOnline is going to be SUPER awesome! See you online!

The green Power Ranger is coming to your couch with Comic Con Africa!

The green Power Ranger is coming to your couch with Comic Con Africa!

It’s the stuff my inner 90s kid’s dreams are made of: Jason David Frank who played the oh-so-handsome Tommy Oliver, the original Mighty Morphin’ Green Ranger in the hit kids’ show Power Rangers, will attend Comic Con Africa’s Online Con in September!

I’m sure I won’t be the only one swooning on my couch as Frank, who morphed into the most different Power Rangers of any in the long-running show’s 26 year history and has appeared in over 225 episodes (more than any other ranger), chats through his incredible career and history over the four day Online Con. Frank has been nearly every colour of the Rangers: he was first the Mighty Morphin’ Green Ranger, followed by Mighty Morphin’ White Ranger, Red Zeo, Red Turbo and Black Dino Thunder Ranger.

Who can forget the long hair, the green tank tops and his incredible turn from bad boy to ultimate good guy?!

Frank ,an accomplished martial artist, is not only a Ju Jitsu, Muay Thai and American Karate expert who has been inducted into the Word Karate Union Hall of Fame, but he has even created his own martial arts system known as Toso Kune Do. He is the owner of Rising Sun Karate which has three schools across America. In January 2013, Frank became the Guinness World Record holder for the most 1-inch pine board broken during a skydive freefall. Jason David Frank will take part in Q&A sessions on all four days of Comic Con Africa’s Online Con, along with other exciting fan interactions.

For the nostalgia, here’s a throwback look at when the Green Ranger first joined the Power Rangers:

Don’t miss Jason David Frank and all of the Comic Con African Online Con fun from 24 to 27 September 2020, daily from 10am to 6pm. For more info, please visit www.comicconafrica.co.za.

Superfans’ July What’s on: things to do

Superfans’ July What’s on: things to do

It’s Month Four of our national lock down and Tendai, Leonie and I are going stir crazy in Cape Town and Harare. Luckily, we’ve got a few things to do (all virtually, of course) to keep our geek minds from turning to mush:

Justice League Run Series: Superman Race

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, that’s us three geeks racing off in our Man of Steel t-shirts from our front doors as we join 20 000 other runners-from-home in the Justice League Series Superman virtual race on Sunday 19 July 2020.

Brought to us by the organisers of the epic Colour Run, this geektastic event will see all runners complete a 2.5km, 5km or 10km run from their front doors, in their living rooms or wherever takes their fancy, engage with each other and the organisers on social media and share their at-home finish line photos.

The Superman race is one of five , all in honour of a DC superhero and culminates with The Flash run in November. Enter here.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2

Netflix is bringing our favourite weird family back for Season 2 on 31 July 2020 and we are TOTALLY excited!

The Umbrella Academy’s second season sees our 7 favourite siblings stuck in the 1960s and causing all kinds of havoc … Klaus even starts a cult πŸ˜‰

Check out the trailer below:

Comic Con Africa’s Quiz Nights:

Every Thursday evening, Comic Con Africa will host an online pop quiz about a series, movie, comic book character etc via YouTube and an app.

I had a magical blast at the Harry Potter Quiz (even I came in way below the expected top 10 – Hermoine is getting cold shivers as we speak!) and I look forward to another where I can show off my geek knowledge.

The Power Rangers Quiz will be held on Thursday 16 July at 7pm. Don’t miss it!

More of a Netflix and Chill lock down lover? We’ve got you covered on what to watch this weekend.

FanCon:Cape Town Comic Con goes virtual!

FanCon:Cape Town Comic Con goes virtual!

I’ve been a loyal FanCon: Cape Town Comic Con attendee since the days it was a geek fest in celebration of Free Comic Book Day at the Stadium on Main so I was pretty bummed when they had to cancel due to COVID 19. That announcement was soon followed by the REALLY cool news that the Con will go on – online from Saturday 4 to Sunday 5 July 2020!

FanCon: Cape Town Comic Con’s online celebration is coming

Touted as a virtual celebration of all things FanCon: Cape Town, this online event will see fans come together to reminisce about the Mother City’s premiere comic book and geek culture convention.

There certainly is a lot to get nostalgic about – let us not forget that FanCon was the first to bless us mere mortals with a chance to sit on the Iron Throne. Here’s what that looked like for me at the first FanCon in 2016:

Getting my Mother of Dragons on at FanCon:Cape Town 2016.

Each year, the Con has gone from strength to strength, moving from the Lookout at the V&A Waterfront to the CTICC and blessing us with all of the geek merchandise, cosplaying competitions, comic book artists and writers we could possibly wish for.

This year’s event will look somewhat different but it definitely won’t feel that way with some super cool activities planned, including virtual cosplay contests, the artists’ alley, a fandom feast and more:

See you at the FanCon:Cape Town online!
