Fright Night is almost upon us, Superfans readers, and if you haven’t already picked out your most terrifying viewing material, what HAVE you been doing?
Here are my top 5 horrifying have-to-see horror shows and movies this Halloween:
1. The Midnight Club
From the director and creator of The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor,Mike Flanagan, comes this spooky series, The Midnight Club, about a group of teenagers suffering from various illnesses and hauntings at the Brightcliffe hospice.
Starring Iman Benson, Igby Rigney, Annarah Cymone, Ruth Codd, William Chris Sumpter, Adia, Aya Furukawa, Sauriyan Sapkota and a return of some Flanagan universe alumni including Zach Gilford, Rahul Kohli and Samantha Sloyan, this series centres around the ghost stories the teens tell each other each night in the hospice’s library at midnight. Some of these stories may or may not be true but the malevolent spirits haunting them are definitely real!
The Midnight Club is currently streaming on Netflix.
2. Shining Vale
More dark comedy than horror noir, Shining Vale sees Courtney Cox of Friends fame play a depressed novelist who moves with her family into an abandoned house where the ghost of the original owner, 1950s housewife Rosemary (Mira Sorvino) takes over her life and body.
Look, if you ask me, a lil’ possession is not a bad trade off for finishing your overdue manuscript, spicing up your sex life with your long-suffering husband and being the perfect mom to two unruly teenagers π
Shining Vale is currently available on Showmax.
3. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
The Galileo Open Air Cinema kicks off its summer season in true horror fan style with its popular annual Halloween screening of an iconic slasher film. This year’s spooktacular offering is the classic Nightmare on Elm Street with Robert Englund as the monster of your dreams, Freddy Krueger. It’s also the coolest thing Johnny Depp has done in a bed, other than the obvious π I highly recommend a horrific Galileo experience – it’s terrifyingly awesome! Book your tickets here.
4. Scream
Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette make a triumphant return in the fifth installment of the popular Scream movie franchise. Expect all kinds of ghoulish callbacks to the previous films and series and get ready to fall in horrible love with the newbies on the Woodsboro block, including YOU‘s Jenna Ortega, who all have ties to the original movie’s characters.
What’s your favourite scary movie? It’s Scream (2022) on Showmax.
5. X
A porn film with a horror remix was NOT on the bucket list of movies I thought I would enjoy but guys and girls, Ti West’s X is a satisfying treat π
Starring Martin Henderson (Virgin River and The Ring), Brittany Snow (the Pitch Perfect movie franchise), rapper Kid Cudi, Mia Goth (Nymphomaniac II) and Jenna Ortega (YOU and Wednesday), the film follows the basic premise of a group of hot, young people being murdered by a vengeful old lady while having sex. You know, like Friday the 13th but for Pornhub stars …LOL.
I don’t know what surprised me more: that a bunch of serious Hollywood actors starred in a horror porno or that a horror porno could actually be this good. It’s well written, the jump scares are unique and the erotic scenes are genuinely well filmed. Bonus points for this movie being filmed as if it was actually happening in the 1970s.
Get your horror kink on with X on Prime Video.
