Three years after the devastating series finale of Game of Thrones and we are READY to be hurt all over again by its prequel series, House of the Dragon.
We’re not going to lie, it feels like this:
How many times have we obsessively watched the most recent trailer? You’ll have to ask Maester Hunnimore, who serves House Targaryen at the time of the Dance of the Dragons, the time that the upcoming show will be set in. Feast your eyes on this:
The show will debut on HBO Max on 21 August 2022.
Dany and Jon’s blonde and powerful ancestors are played by a stellar cast of performers that reads like a who’s who of Hollywood list. These include: Matt Smith (our favourite Doctor Who and The Crown‘s young Prince Philip) as bad boy Prince Daemon Targaryen; Emma D’Arcy (Misbehavior and Hanna) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen,Daemon’s opponent for the Iron Throne; Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) as Viserys I (yes, the namesake of Dany’s psycho brother) and Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon Targaryen (Jon and his dead half-brother’s namesake). Of course, the royal family is surrounded by council members and families we are somewhat familiar with already: Hand of the King, Otto Hightower, played by the underrated and talented Rhys Ifans (Luna Lovegood’s dad in the Harry Potter films and Lizard in the Spiderman franchise); Jason Lannister (our favorite incestuous twins’ great-great-great granddaddy) played by Jefferson Hall (Tenet and Halloween) and Corlys Velaryon (the predecessor of House Greyjoy) played by Steven Toussaint (Judge Dredd).
A Song of Ice&Fire book author George R.R. Martin has teamed up with acclaimed director of several incredible GOT episodes Miguel Sapochnik to create House of the Dragon and we are thrilled! We know the true King of the Seven Kingdoms should really be finishing our seriously overdue manuscript for Winds of Winter, the next novel, but at least now we know that this show cannot be destroyed by David Benioff and D.B Weiss. Thank the Lord of Light for small mercies.
Since this show is set 300 years before the world we are familiar with, you are going to want to brush up on your Targaryen history. We suggest heading to your nearest bookstore or ordering your copies online of the maesters’ companion book, The World of Ice&Fire and the recently released fantasy Fire&Blood novel.
